If I buy there, how far is the hospital? Emergency care in Friuli, town by town
In 144 towns out of 215, a round-the-clock emergency department is within twenty minutes of the town hall; in 31 towns, nearly all in the mountains, it takes over half an hour. Below: drive times, the hospital network and the rules for newcomers.

Where emergency care is close, and where it isn't
Minutes by car on empty roads, from each town hall to the nearest of the region's 11 emergency departments open day and night (pronto soccorso).
- Trieste and the Karst: median 13 min; hills and plain 16 min; coast and lagoon 18 min.
- The beach is not next to the hospital: Grado is 38 min from Monfalcone, Lignano 24 min from Latisana. All they have is a first-aid post, which in Lignano's case opens in summer only.
- Mountains: 28 min; just 19 towns out of 58 are within twenty minutes.
Around 31,000 people live more than half an hour away.
Moving here from abroad: the rules
- 112 for any emergency, free, even from a mobile without a SIM card. Every call in the region goes to one control room in Palmanova; 118 still works.
- 116117 for anything that is not urgent: free, always open, with an interpreting service in several languages. At night, at weekends and on public holidays it puts you through to the out-of-hours doctor (guardia medica).
- Short stays and holiday homes: if you are insured in an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gets you necessary care in public and contracted facilities on the same terms as Italians, paying only the patient charge (ticket), if any. Planned treatment is not covered; without the card you pay and claim it back at home. UK residents use the UK GHIC or UK EHIC for necessary state healthcare in the same way.
- Taking up residence: EU citizens staying longer than three months must join the national health service (SSN) if they work here, hold permanent residence, or bring an S1 form, which also exists for pensioners. Otherwise you need private insurance covering all risks, or voluntary registration. You sign up at the health registry office (anagrafe sanitaria) of your district with your tax code and proof of residence, then choose a family doctor, free of charge.
- Moving from the UK: if you draw a UK State Pension you may be entitled to an S1 form, which you register with the local health authority here. Without one, on an elective-residence permit, you need a private policy or voluntary paid registration for the calendar year, which cannot be split or backdated.
- A&E charges: around Pordenone a visit closed as a white code (not urgent) costs €25; admissions, injuries and exempt patients pay nothing.
The purchase itself: the steps of a purchase.
Who does what: A&E, hubs, specialist centres
- Udine and Trieste (Cattinara) are the two top-level emergency hospitals, with cardiac surgery and neurosurgery; Udine has the only major trauma centre.
- Pordenone sits one level below but is a hub for heart attacks and strokes, with a round-the-clock cardiac catheter lab and a stroke unit, like Udine and Trieste.
- Eight district hospitals keep a 24-hour A&E: Tolmezzo, San Daniele, Palmanova, Latisana, Gorizia, Monfalcone, San Vito al Tagliamento and Spilimbergo. Tolmezzo is the nearest for 39 towns, from Carnia to the Austrian border and down to Venzone and Bordano.
When the ambulance ECG shows a heart attack, or a stroke is suspected, the crew heads straight for a hub (cardiac catheter lab or stroke unit) and bypasses the nearest hospital, so those minutes count too: 169 towns are within 45 minutes; the furthest, Sappada, is 1 h 33 away.
Six towns side by side
| Bordano | Gemona del Friuli | Tarvisio | Sappada | Lignano Sabbiadoro | Udine | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24h emergency room | 19 min | 23 min | 44 min | 56 min | 24 min | 8 min |
| Hub hospital | 36 min | 31 min | 1 h 05 | 1 h 33 | 57 min | 8 min |
| Hospital across the border | 1 h 06 | 1 h 01 | 26 min | 1 h 37 | 1 h 05 | 47 min |
Bordano holds up well: Tolmezzo A&E in 19 min, the Udine hub in 36 min. Gemona is further than Bordano from A&E (23 min) but nearer the hub (31 min). Of the mountain towns, Trasaghis is the closest to a hub, at 32 min.
Cividale, Sacile, Gemona: what has closed
A first-aid post (punto di primo intervento) is not an A&E: it treats minor emergencies and stabilises patients, but it was close by. Since late 2025 Cividale and Sacile have lost theirs; each now has a primary-care clinic for non-urgent needs in its community health centre (Casa della Comunità). Their nearest A&E is Udine (27 min) and Pordenone (18 min). In Gemona the centre opened on 1 December 2025. The first-aid post is missing from the region's list of emergency departments, where the health authority does list Lignano's, and a regional council question of October 2026 treats its closure as done; we found no announcement from the authority itself. Gemona's nearest A&E is San Daniele, 23 min away. For heart attacks and strokes the route already led to a hub. What changes is minor emergencies, which now go to A&E. For anything non-urgent at night, at weekends or on holidays, call 116117; in an emergency, 112.
The most remote towns, and hospitals over the border
| # | Municipality | Zone | 24h emergency room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Erto e Casso | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 1 h 02 |
| 2 | Drenchia | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 57 min |
| 3 | Sappada | Carnia and Sappada | 56 min |
| 4 | Cimolais | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 54 min |
| 5 | Claut | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 54 min |
| 6 | Grimacco | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 49 min |
| 7 | Stregna | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 48 min |
| 8 | Forni di Sopra | Carnia and Sappada | 45 min |
| 9 | Tarvisio | Tarvisio, Canal del Ferro and Val Resia | 44 min |
| 10 | Savogna | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 42 min |
In 9 border towns the nearest hospital is outside the region. From Tarvisio, the Klinikum in Villach is 26 min away, Tolmezzo 44 min. From Sappada, the hospital at Pieve di Cadore in the Veneto takes 41 min; from Erto e Casso, Belluno takes 37 min. We have not checked what emergency care the Veneto hospitals offer, and the control room, not the map, decides where an ambulance goes.
Air ambulance: based at Pasian di Prato near Udine and flying 24 hours a day, with about 1,200 missions a year (40% in the mountains) and night-time winch rescues since March 2026. No town hall is more than 71 km from the base as the crow flies.
Questions
Can I use my EHIC card in Italy?
Yes, for necessary care during a temporary stay, in public and contracted facilities, on the same terms as Italian patients; not for planned treatment.
How do EU pensioners register with the Italian health service?
After registering residence, take an S1 form from your home country to the district health registry office (anagrafe sanitaria), then choose a family doctor. Without an S1: full private insurance or voluntary registration.
What is the emergency number in Italy?
112, free from any phone. For non-urgent medical help and the out-of-hours doctor, 116117.
How far is the nearest hospital from Tarvisio?
Villach, in Austria, is 26 min by car without traffic; the Italian A&E in Tolmezzo is 44 min.
