Malborghetto Valbruna: the Val Canale between Tarvisio and Pontebba, by the numbers

Regional Law 20/2009, which protects the German-speaking communities of Friuli Venezia Giulia, also gives the municipality the name Malborgeth-Wolfsbach; on the Region's list of municipalities with Slovene-speaking residents it appears as Naborjet - Ovčja vas. For 2025 the council secured funding for a German-language help desk.

Its territory covers 124.2 km², and only 4 municipalities are larger in the region. At the end of 2024 it had 892 residents, 7 per km²; change since 2001: -14%. The town hall stands in Malborghetto, 727 m above sea level. To the west, towards Pontebba, lie Cucco, Santa Caterina and Bagni di Lusnizza; to the east, towards Tarvisio, Ugovizza and Valbruna.

Without traffic, Udine is 1 h 2 min by car, Ljubljana 1 h 38 min and Trieste 1 h 47 min; the nearest A23 junction bears the municipality's own name. For skiing, the Monte Lussari gondola at Camporosso is 9 min away and Kranjska Gora 33 min.

The station is Ugovizza-Valbruna. The cross-border Mi.Co.Tra. stops there 2 times a day towards Villach and as often towards Udine; Saturday, Sunday and holiday services continue to Trieste. On Friday 23 October 2026 the departure board also showed 6 regional trains, including through services to Udine. That timetable runs out on 12 December 2026; anyone choosing a house for the railway should look at its successor (trains, airports and motorways).

On the Italian side, the 24-hour A&E nearest the town hall is Tolmezzo's, 40 min away. Klinikum Villach in Austria, with its emergency departments, is 37 min away. Udine's hospital, the nearest hub for cardiac and stroke emergencies, takes 1 h 1 min by road. In an emergency you call 112, and the control room, not your satnav, decides where the ambulance goes (hospitals and A&E).

At the winter solstice sunlight reaches the town hall for 2 h 52 min altogether, from a first ray at 10:29 to a final one at 14:28; with no mountains around it would be 8 h 33 min. Only 5 town halls in the region get less. From one village to the next the gap runs to hours:

Frost: 134 nights a year below freezing, a figure beaten by just 3 municipalities (ARPA FVG climate grid, 1991–2020). January: mean −2.0 °C, average lows −6.4 °C. July highs average 25.2 °C.

OMI values for standard homes, first half of 2026:

• Valbruna, the dearest: €900/m²–€1,350/m²;
• central OMI zone: €700/m²–€950/m²;
• rest of the municipality: €590/m²–€860/m².

The municipal median is €825/m²; at that price €200,000 covers around 240 m², excluding taxes and the notary's bill. Detached houses (ville e villini) are valued only in the central zone, at €900/m². Zone by zone, no value has moved since 2021. Home sales in 2025: 34.

When the 2011 census was taken, 62% of the homes here had no registered resident, holiday homes included. Tourists spent 40,500 nights here in 2025: 43% in summer, 31% between December and March. The council has charged a tourist tax since 1 April 2026, holiday lets included: €1.50 per person per night, for at most 7 nights.

• Land register (libro fondiario): it covers the whole municipality, and you only become the owner once a land-register judge has your title entered (how it works).
• ILIA 2026, the regional property tax that replaces IMU: 0.70% on the first «second home» reported to the Region (each owner can report a single one across the region), otherwise 0.80%, the council's catch-all rate; in Tarvisio the same home would pay 1.06% (ILIA explained).
• Full fibre (FTTH): within reach of 97.2% of households.
• Earthquakes: seismic zone 2.
• Floods and landslides: ISPRA puts 14.3% of buildings in medium-hazard flood areas (P2) and 7.0% in zones of high to very high landslide hazard (P3–P4). The council's 2025–2027 programme includes upkeep of the works built after the 2003 flood and new rockfall barriers.
