Trains, airports and motorways: getting around from Friuli
Flying in? From 130 towns out of 215, the drive to Trieste Airport takes an hour or less. Living with little driving is harder: on Friday 23 October 2026 passenger trains stopped in just 35 towns. Below, town by town, the drive to airport, station and motorway.
Published 23 October 2026
Flying in: Trieste for most, Venice for the west
Trieste Airport is not in Trieste. It sits at Ronchi dei Legionari, 40 min by car from Trieste's town hall, 37 min from Udine, 27 min from Gorizia and 1 h 28 min from Tarvisio. It has its own railway station, served on 23 October 2026 by through trains to Udine, Venice and Trieste; in the timetable valid until 12 December, the cross-border Mi.Co.Tra. also calls there on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

On the plain around Pordenone, Venice Marco Polo comes into play: the median for that area is 55 min to Venice against 1 h 1 min to Trieste. Pordenone itself is 51 min from Venice and 58 min from Trieste. The town closest to Marco Polo is Pravisdomini, at 46 min. We have not timed the drive to Ljubljana or Klagenfurt airports; drive times to those cities are in how far Friuli is from home.
Trains: where they actually stop
On a map Friuli looks well served by rail. Counting the trains that stopped on Friday 23 October 2026 thins it out: at 26 of the region's 68 RFI stations, no passenger train called from morning to night.
- The Sacile–Gemona foothill line: trains from Sacile terminated at Maniago; beyond it, towards Gemona, no train called that day.
- Udine–Cividale: the line is closed for works, and the FUC timetable that started on 14 September 2026 runs it entirely with replacement buses. That day, from Cividale, the nearest station with trains was Buttrio, 18 min away by car.
- Between Udine and Cervignano trains called only at Palmanova.
- On the coast, Latisana and San Giorgio di Nogaro had trains to Venice and Trieste that day, none to Udine. Lignano's station is Latisana, 25 min away.
The main stations, Udine, Pordenone and Trieste, had through trains that Friday to Venice, Milan and Rome.
Reaching Udine without a car
On 23 October 2026, for 171 towns of the 215, the nearest station, or one in the town itself, had direct trains to Udine. The map shows the drive to it.

Within ten minutes: 80 towns; within twenty: 144. The valleys of Carnia all lead down to a station called Carnia, which lies within Venzone's boundaries. Tolmezzo is 16 min away; Sappada, at 1 h 8 min, has the longest drive in the region. In the west, Maniago's nearest direct train to Udine leaves from Pordenone (30 min).
To Austria by rail: the Mi.Co.Tra.
The Mi.Co.Tra. is a cross-border train between Friuli and Carinthia, run by Ferrovie Udine Cividale together with Austria's ÖBB. In the timetable valid until 12 December 2026 it runs 2 trains a day in each direction between Udine and Villach, all year round; the morning train from Udine reaches Villach in 1 h 44 min.
- Stops in Friuli: Udine, Gemona del Friuli, Venzone, Carnia, Pontebba, Ugovizza-Valbruna, Tarvisio Boscoverde.
- Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: the train runs through to Trieste with no change, also calling at Monfalcone, Trieste Airport, Cervignano-Aquileia-Grado and Palmanova.
- Until 11 December 2026 engineering works by RFI move some departures; FUC lists them in a separate notice.
A stop served every day is within half an hour's drive for 87 towns.
The motorway
We count A4, A23, A28 and A34 junctions, timing the drive to where the slip road meets the ordinary road. The median town needs 15 min. The long drives are all in mountain valleys:
| # | Municipality | Zone | To the motorway |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sappada | Carnia and Sappada | 1 h 2 min |
| 2 | Cimolais | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 59 min |
| 3 | Claut | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 59 min |
| 4 | Drenchia | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 57 min |
| 5 | Erto e Casso | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 56 min |
| 6 | Tramonti di Sotto | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 55 min |
| 7 | Tramonti di Sopra | Friulian Dolomites and Val Tramontina | 53 min |
| 8 | Forni di Sopra | Carnia and Sappada | 50 min |
| 9 | Grimacco | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 49 min |
| 10 | Stregna | Cividale and the Natisone valleys | 48 min |
For Erto e Casso, Cimolais and Claut the A27 towards Belluno, in the Veneto, is closer; it is not counted here. In Trieste the nearest A4 junction is at Sistiana, 24 min from the town hall, but the toll-free RA13 link road is quicker to reach.
How these numbers were made
- By car: minutes with no traffic, measured from each town hall and computed with the OSRM router over OpenStreetMap (airports on 7 October, stations and junctions on 22 October 2026), without summer queues, snow or roadworks.
- By train: departure boards on one weekday, Friday 23 October 2026, plus the FUC timetables. A new timetable starts after 12 December 2026: if a train matters to your choice of house, check the current one.
- Not checked here: ÖBB long-distance trains (Railjet by day, Nightjet by night) and rail links to Slovenia.
