Coast & Lagoon brings together nine municipalities: about 399 km², 5% of the region, with 78,626 residents in 2024. Five of them face the open sea according to ISTAT, Italy's statistics office: Lignano Sabbiadoro, Marano Lagunare, Grado, Staranzano and Monfalcone. The other four, Latisana, Aquileia, Terzo d'Aquileia and San Canzian d'Isonzo, have most of their land in the regional landscape plan's ‘Lagoon and coast’ zone, but their town centres lie a few kilometres inland.
This is flat country: every town hall sits between 4 and 13 metres above sea level. The largest town is Monfalcone, with 30,360 inhabitants; Grado has 7,532 and Lignano 6,888.
The natural gateway is Trieste Airport at Ronchi dei Legionari. Driving without traffic, the area's town halls are a median 20 minutes from the terminal, ranging from 8 minutes for San Canzian d'Isonzo to 59 for Lignano. From Piazza Unità in Trieste the median is about 55 minutes, from Udine 43, from Venice airport 1 hour 20 minutes. From Munich or Vienna, allow more than five hours.
