This area covers the ten municipalities that the regional landscape plan assigns to the ‘Karst and eastern coast’ zone: Trieste, Muggia, San Dorligo della Valle, Sgonico, Monrupino and Duino Aurisina in the former province of Trieste, and Doberdò del Lago, Savogna d'Isonzo, Sagrado and Fogliano Redipuglia on the Gorizia side. Together they cover 278 km² and have 235,925 residents, but 198,388 of them live in the city of Trieste; the other nine municipalities have 37,537 between them.
For the city of Trieste itself, our sister site triestevillas.com is the place to look, and we do not repeat its listings here. On FriuliVillas this area is about what surrounds the city: the Karst plateau, the coast towards Duino, Muggia on the south side of the gulf, and the Gorizia Karst towards the Isonzo.
Six of the ten municipalities have an official name in both Italian and Slovene, as recorded by ISTAT: Duino Aurisina-Devin Nabrežina, Monrupino-Repentabor, San Dorligo della Valle-Dolina, Sgonico-Zgonik, Doberdò del Lago-Doberdob and Savogna d'Isonzo-Sovodnje ob Soči. From Piazza Unità, driving without traffic, Muggia is about 18 minutes away, Duino Aurisina 24 and Doberdò del Lago 41; from Ljubljana the median for the area is 1 h 15 min.
